Working With the Docent Club
We Conceptualized and Created a visitors center for:
Charles Fortes Museum School

This past spring at Fortes Museum School I had the pleasure of working with the Docent club on the visitors center project. Their membership is made up of several hardworking student volunteers who represent fortes' museum as expert tour guides as well as museum curators who protect and preserve the on-going exhibits. My role as the visiting artist was to help the students execute their vision of having a visitors center that would allow visitors to tell us how they liked our museum, give suggestions and/or leave small gifts

Above are images of the visitor's entrance into Fortes. This design resulted from student research and planning. The images you see are represent the following.

• The rainbow braid and the spool represent the braiding that once was made in this school years ago when it was a factory.
• The rainbow braid of the past turns into a contemporary braid that the students often wear at Fortes today (we even painted flag symbols of the countries we come from on the beads).
• The rainbow color represents the multi-cultural students who attend Fortes today as well as the people who worked in the mill.
• The strange white ghost-like young man who seems to be coming out of the wall is a friendly reminder of Fortes past. They say he visits the school on occasion (Ask the docents about him when you visit!)
• The plastic casing that the ghost is holding is a place for visitors to leave messages and gifts to the Fortes Museum. We also have a place for visitors to sign in and leave
• The quote on the wall was researched and selected by the docents and can be viewed directly across from the casing.
